Watch WebTV and WebRadios on your Windows Sidebar. Switch Fullscreen, schedule your recordings. Use the Drag & Drop to play your media. FreeHD use VLC activeX. You can use your own playlist.

Lastest version 4.5. You must install VLC 0.9.9 to support .flv extension. FreeHD supports YouTube. Thanks to you, FreeHD wouldn't exist without advertising support and you.

Prerequisite Vista:

Sidebar 32 bits (most important for Vista 64bits, read FAQs)
VLC 0.9.9 with ActiveX VLC 0.9.9 VideoLan.

Prerequisite XP:

SP3 pack
Internet Explorer 7
Install Sidebar FreeHD on XP
VLC 0.9.9 with ActiveX VLC 0.9.9 VideoLan.

Install

Install VLC 0.9.9 with "ActiveX Plugin" VLC 0.9.9 VideoLan.

Download the last gadget FreeHD.gadget (Freeware).
Install FreeHD gadget.

Settings

Go to Settings
Change parameters (example proxy configuration -> :http-proxy=http://user:pwd@myproxy:3128, see FAQs)
Save your settings
You can have a message for update under FreeHD version

Playlist Selection

Click on and choose your Playlist.

Playlist Type:

Playlist URL (define in Settings)
WebTV
WebRadio
Movies (define in Settings)
Music (define in Settings)

Recording

Click on Recording button
Select your Playlist
Select your Stream
The filename must have no extension, no folder and no spaces
Save (a User Account Control is open to add Scheduled Task)

Podcasts Service

Click on button and discover Podcasts Area.

News
Games
and others

In this interface, you can "watch online" (VLC ActiveX controls download), "watch & download" (FreeHD controls download) or "download". In the 2 latest cases, contents are saved in "Downloads Area".

You can open Logs Interface, to understand different problems

FAQs

Switch Fullscreen?
- You can double-click on your movie or click on right top button to have another display.

This does not work?
- Check your firewall rules, you must have an exception on Sidebar executable and VLC executable
- Copy third-party DLLs from VLC install dir to a folder in C:\Windows\System32 (avcodec-51.dll, libfontconfig-1.dll, libfreetype-6.dll, libgcrypt.dll, libgpg-error-0.dll, libiconv-2.dll, libxml2-2.dll, libz-1-2.dll). Relaunch your Sidebar.

How to use FreeHD_Diagnostic
- Get FreeHD_Diagnostic FreeHD_Diagnostic
- Unzip archive on your desktop
- Launch Diagnostic.wsf
- Report is generated on your desktop freehd.diagnostic.txt
- Send this report to bugs@keyphrene.com

To startup, I have this message: ActiveX not found, Check your VLC installation
- ActiveX DLL has not found in the VLC folder (axvlc.dll), Reinstall VLC with "ActiveX Plugin"

How to register VLC ActiveX control?
- Open a DOS command prompt as administrator
- cd /d "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC" on Vista 32bits or cd /d "C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC" or Vista 64bits
- regsvr32 axvlc.dll
- Relaunch your Sidebar
- Relaunch FreeHD

This does not work on Vista 64 bits?
- VLC ActiveX is not compatible with Sidebar 64 bits, you must launch Sidebar 32 bits. Follow this procedure
- Remove FreeHD.
- Stop Windows SideBar
- Check Windows Tasks, Sidebar.exe doesn't must exist
- Launch C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Sidebar\sidebar.exe
- Reinstall FreeHD

How configure proxy in the settings
- First, You must configure Internet Explorer proxy (VLC doesn't support IE proxy authentication)
- Second, You must configure FreeHD settings to copy this example ( http-proxy=http://user[:password@]proxy.example.com:port/ ), change proxy name, and proxy port, user and password are optionals.

How to install FreeHD on Windows XP?
- Go to this address FreeHD on XP

How to add a WebRadio or a WebTV in playlist?
- Try your URL with VLC and send me this URL via this address support

Of course, normaly FreeHD interface must detect your language and use it. Otherwise you can change language parameter in this file C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets\FreeHD.gadget\conf\FreeHD.user.inf
If you want to add your station, send me your URL with radio Label (see FAQs). Help me to add WebTV and WebRadio to this lists.

I think I figured out part of the AFTV problem, at least a work around. For some reason I have to reset the VLC Filename in Settings to get it to work for a while.

If you can read yours streams with VLC, so you can add yours streams in m3u file and set your m3u filename in Playlist URL in settings.

Can we get a 1/2 screen size? The two small ones are often too small and full screen stretches out (distorts) the picture too much.
This is a 22" flat screen but set to 1024x768. 1/2 or 2/3 would be nice.

Hi Styx, In the next release, I have added an aspect ratio (1:1, 4:3, 16:9 ...) and intermediate screen is changeable. To be in fullscreen, Double click is ever active.

Nice gadget, howver when I cange the aspect ratio in the settings, the output on the gadget isn't affected so all video is stretched

Hello,

I am from the VLC team.
Since 0.9.8a, the activeX is repaired, and there isn't dll (avcodec-51.dll, libfontconfig-1.dll, libfreetype-6.dll, libgcrypt.dll, libgpg-error-0.dll, libiconv-2.dll, libxml2-2.dll, libz-1-2.dl) anymore.

Moreover, I might register the ActiveX by default, if that helps you.

Question: FLV support has been restored on this version? Because I developp a YouTube integration in the next release.

Hi, this seems like a really good gadget, but I can't get it to work...

I'm trying to run it in 64 bits with the instructions you provided, but it doesn't seem to help; FreeHD keeps insisting that I need to install VLC even though I already did... I tried putting in the path to it in settings, but it will not save... Is there any chance of FreeHD working for WV 64 bit in your next release?

Can you use FreeHD_Diagnostic. FAQs explain this. FreeHD_Diagnostic generate a report, send me this report to analyse.

Don't worry, FreeHD working for Windows 64 bits :D

Everytime, I click on options, am getting the following error and it directs to a link to donwload VLC.
"You must install Windows VLC 0.9.x and reboot the sidebar/"
I've tried re installing VLS, still the same.
Then as per FAQs for not working on Vista 64 bit, I closed side bar, rebooted and again installed the Free HD. But, still its giving the same pop-up error.
Please mail me if u know how to fix this issue.

You must have the good version of VLC (0.9.8a) and put your mp4 video files in Video folder. I have added 3gp in the next release.

Hello, I have set the proxy settings in the options. The problem is that I can only pick up a few of the channels, maybe five or six. Why is this happening? I have tried to change to a few different proxy servers but nothing helped. It does not matter if they are http, rtsp, mms. The few channels that I can get are all different as far that goes. How can I fix this problem?

Hi moltodawger, You must configure proxy settings in FreeHD and Internet Explorer. All streams don't pass through proxy.

Hi Duane, I try this stream http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r1.asx without success. There is maybe a limitation on IP. So I have added this stream in the list (BBC Radio 1). Test it and tell me if it's OK.
